The Person
|
John Wilson Gill was born on Sept. 10 of 1894. He was the third child born to John and Bridget Gill. He was a clerk, laborer, soldier, fireman, teller (Cleveland Trust), auditor, and worked for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Nickel Plate Railroads. As a child he lived in the near vicinity of St. Malachi, so it is probable that he went there for schooling. Uncle John was married on September 2, 1926 by Fr. Joseph Gerz, pastor of St. Stephen at the time, to Clara Frances. They had one child, John A. Gill, born February 14, 1932. John married Christine Irmen (parents Eunice and Charles Irmen; they in turn had 4 children: John Patrick (Dec. 7, 1962), Michael Joseph (May 18, 1964), Christina Marie (Oct. 23, 1969) and Kathleen Anne, (Jan. 23, 1972). Uncle John served in the armed forces. His enlistment number was 1950897 and he entered the service when the family was living on 64th street. He entered the National Army from Cleveland, Ohio, on October 3, 1917. Uncle John assisted Patrick McCafferty in the financial aspects of his business, the Wilson Construction Company. At that time in Cleveland, owners of businesses could not work as laborers and go to work on their own jobs. For this reason the title of the company included Uncle John's middle name. When he would come to visit, the dining room table was usually strewn with papers as both he (Uncle John), Patrick McCafferty, and Helen McCafferty would go over the financial aspects of the Wilson Construction Company business. Uncle John and Aunt Clara were baptismal godparents for Joe McCafferty. It is said of Uncle John that he always selected a rainy day for the K of C picnic. Uncle John died August 3, 1966 and Clara died December 29, 1983.
